How to Weatherproof Your Doors and Windows

Introduction

Drafty doors and windows can significantly increase your energy bills and make your home uncomfortable. Weatherproofing is one of the easiest and most cost-effective home repairs you can do yourself. Here's how to seal up those gaps and keep your home cozy year-round.

What You'll Need

  • Weatherstripping (foam, rubber, or V-strip)
  • Door sweep
  • Caulk & caulk gun
  • Utility knife
  • Screwdriver
  • Measuring tape
  • Scissors

Step 1: Inspect for Drafts

On a windy day, hold a lit candle or incense stick near door and window frames. If the flame flickers, you've found a draft. Mark these spots with tape.

Step 2: Remove Old Weatherstripping

Peel off any old, worn weatherstripping. Clean the surface thoroughly with a damp cloth and let it dry completely before applying new material.

Step 3: Apply New Weatherstripping

Measure the door or window frame and cut weatherstripping to size. Peel off the adhesive backing and press firmly into place along the frame. For best results, use V-strip for the sides and foam tape for the top and bottom.

Step 4: Install a Door Sweep

A door sweep seals the gap at the bottom of the door. Measure the door width, cut the sweep to size, and screw it into place on the interior side of the door.

Step 5: Caulk Around Window Frames

Apply a bead of caulk around the exterior of window frames where they meet the wall. Smooth with a wet finger and let dry completely. This prevents water infiltration and air leaks.

Step 6: Check and Adjust Door Alignment

If your door doesn't close properly, adjust the hinges or strike plate. A misaligned door creates gaps that no amount of weatherstripping can fully seal.

Pro Tips

  • Replace weatherstripping every 2–3 years for best performance.
  • Use silicone caulk for exterior applications — it's more durable than latex.
  • Check windows and doors before winter for maximum energy savings.
