How to Repair a Squeaky Wood Floor

How to Repair a Squeaky Wood Floor

Introduction

Squeaky floors are one of the most common carpentry issues in older homes. The good news is that fixing them is usually a simple DIY job that requires minimal tools and materials. Here's how to silence those annoying squeaks for good!

What You'll Need

  • Screwdriver or drill
  • Wood screws (1.5–2 inch)
  • Talcum powder or powdered graphite
  • Wood glue
  • Hammer & finishing nails
  • Putty & wood filler

Why Do Floors Squeak?

Squeaks happen when floorboards rub against each other or against the subfloor due to loose nails, gaps, or seasonal wood movement. Identifying the exact spot is the first step.

Step 1: Locate the Squeak

Walk slowly across the floor to pinpoint the squeaky area. Mark it with tape so you can work on it precisely.

Step 2: Try the Quick Fix First

Sprinkle talcum powder or powdered graphite between the floorboards and work it in with a cloth. This lubricates the boards and often eliminates minor squeaks instantly.

Step 3: Secure Loose Boards with Screws

If the squeak persists, drive wood screws through the floorboard into the subfloor at an angle. This pulls the boards tight and eliminates movement. Countersink the screws and fill the holes with wood filler.

Step 4: Apply Wood Glue for Gaps

If there's a visible gap between boards, apply wood glue and clamp the boards together until dry. Wipe away excess glue immediately.

Step 5: Nail Down Loose Boards

For boards that have popped up, use finishing nails to secure them back down. Set the nails below the surface and fill with wood putty for a clean finish.

Pro Tips

  • Work from below (basement or crawl space) if accessible — it's easier and less visible.
  • Seasonal humidity changes cause wood to expand and contract — a humidifier can help prevent future squeaks.
  • If the entire floor squeaks, the subfloor may need reinforcement.
