How to Paint a Room Like a Professional

How to Paint a Room Like a Professional

Introduction

A fresh coat of paint is one of the most affordable ways to transform a room. With the right tools and technique, you can achieve a smooth, professional-looking finish without hiring a painter. Here's your step-by-step guide to painting a room like a pro.

What You'll Need

  • Paint (primer + topcoat)
  • Paint rollers & roller covers
  • Angled paint brush
  • Painter's tape
  • Paint tray & liner
  • Drop cloth
  • Sandpaper (120-grit)
  • Putty knife & wall filler
  • Stir stick

Step 1: Prepare the Room

Remove furniture or move it to the center of the room. Lay drop cloths over the floor and any remaining furniture. Remove outlet covers and switch plates.

Step 2: Repair the Walls

Fill any holes or cracks with wall filler using a putty knife. Once dry, sand smooth with 120-grit sandpaper. Wipe away dust with a damp cloth.

Step 3: Apply Painter's Tape

Apply painter's tape along edges where the wall meets the ceiling, trim, and baseboards. Press the tape firmly to prevent paint bleeding underneath.

Step 4: Apply Primer

Apply a coat of primer, especially if you're covering a dark color or painting new drywall. Let it dry completely before applying topcoat.

Step 5: Cut In the Edges

Use an angled brush to paint a 2-3 inch band along all edges. This is called "cutting in" and ensures clean lines where a roller can't reach.

Step 6: Roll the Walls

Load your roller with paint and apply in a W or M pattern to distribute paint evenly. Work in sections from top to bottom. Apply two coats for best coverage, allowing each coat to dry fully.

Step 7: Remove Tape and Clean Up

Remove painter's tape while the paint is still slightly wet for the cleanest lines. Pull the tape back at a 45-degree angle. Clean brushes and rollers thoroughly after use.

Pro Tips

  • Always stir paint thoroughly before use — never shake it.
  • Use a roller with the correct nap thickness for your wall texture.
  • Paint in natural light to spot missed areas and drips easily.
  • Two thin coats always look better than one thick coat.
