Introduction
Tiling a floor or wall can completely transform a room. With the right preparation and technique, you can achieve a professional-looking result on your own. Follow this step-by-step guide to lay tiles like a pro!
What You'll Need
- Tiles of your choice
- Tile adhesive & notched trowel
- Tile spacers
- Grout & grout float
- Tile cutter or wet saw
- Level & measuring tape
- Sponge & bucket
Step 1: Prepare the Surface
Make sure the surface is clean, dry, and level. Remove any old tiles, adhesive, or debris. Fill cracks with filler and let it dry completely before tiling.
Step 2: Plan Your Layout
Find the center of the room and dry-lay tiles without adhesive to plan the layout. This ensures symmetrical placement and minimizes awkward cuts at the edges.
Step 3: Apply Tile Adhesive
Mix the adhesive according to the manufacturer's instructions. Use a notched trowel to spread it evenly on the surface, working in small sections (about 1 square meter at a time).
Step 4: Lay the Tiles
Press each tile firmly into the adhesive with a slight twisting motion. Use tile spacers to maintain even gaps between tiles. Check with a level frequently to ensure tiles are flat and even.
Step 5: Cut Tiles for Edges
Measure and mark tiles that need to be cut for edges and corners. Use a tile cutter or wet saw for clean, precise cuts.
Step 6: Apply Grout
Once the adhesive has fully cured (usually 24 hours), remove the spacers and apply grout using a grout float. Work the grout into the joints at a 45-degree angle, then wipe away excess with a damp sponge.
Step 7: Seal and Finish
After the grout has dried, apply a grout sealer to protect against moisture and staining. Polish the tiles with a dry cloth for a sparkling finish.
Pro Tips
- Always buy 10% more tiles than needed to account for cuts and breakage.
- Use a rubber mallet to gently tap tiles into place for a better bond.
- Clean grout haze from tiles within 30 minutes before it hardens.
