How to Inspect and Repair Your Roof After a Storm

How to Inspect and Repair Your Roof After a Storm

Introduction

After a major storm, your roof may have sustained damage that isn't immediately visible from the ground. A timely inspection and repair can prevent costly water damage and structural issues. Here's how to safely inspect and repair your roof.

What You'll Need

  • Ladder & safety harness
  • Replacement shingles
  • Roofing nails & hammer
  • Roofing adhesive & sealant
  • Flashing tape
  • Pry bar
  • Caulk gun

Step 1: Safety First

Never inspect your roof during or immediately after a storm. Wait for dry, calm weather. Use a sturdy ladder and wear non-slip shoes. Consider a safety harness for steep roofs.

Step 2: Inspect from the Ground First

Use binoculars to scan the roof from the ground. Look for missing, curled, or cracked shingles, damaged flashing, and debris accumulation in gutters.

Step 3: Check the Attic

Before climbing on the roof, inspect your attic for water stains, daylight coming through, or damp insulation. These are signs of roof damage.

Step 4: Inspect the Roof Surface

Carefully walk the roof and check for missing or damaged shingles, cracked flashing around chimneys and vents, and lifted or loose shingles.

Step 5: Replace Damaged Shingles

Use a pry bar to remove damaged shingles and the nails holding them. Slide the new shingle into place, nail it down, and apply roofing adhesive under the edges of surrounding shingles to seal them.

Step 6: Seal Flashing and Gaps

Apply roofing sealant or flashing tape around chimneys, vents, and skylights where leaks commonly occur. Press firmly and smooth for a watertight seal.

Pro Tips

  • Document all damage with photos before making repairs — useful for insurance claims.
  • Replace shingles in batches to ensure color matching.
  • If damage is extensive, consult a professional roofer.
