What Is Epoxy Paint?
Epoxy paint is a two-component coating system that combines an epoxy resin with a hardener to create an incredibly durable, chemical-resistant finish. Unlike standard floor paint, epoxy bonds chemically to the surface, making it ideal for high-traffic areas like garages, basements, workshops, and commercial spaces.

Surface Preparation: The Most Important Step
Proper surface prep is the key to a successful epoxy application. Skipping this step is the #1 reason epoxy fails.
- Clean the surface — remove all oil, grease, and debris with a degreaser
- Repair cracks — fill any cracks or holes with an epoxy filler
- Etch or grind — open the concrete pores using acid etching or mechanical grinding
- Moisture test — tape plastic sheeting to the floor for 24 hours; if condensation forms, address moisture issues first
- Vacuum thoroughly — remove all dust before application
Step-by-Step Application Guide
Step 1: Mix the Epoxy
Combine Part A (resin) and Part B (hardener) according to the manufacturer's ratio. Mix thoroughly for 3–5 minutes. Allow the mixture to “induct” (rest) for 30 minutes before applying.
Step 2: Apply the Primer Coat
Use a roller with a 3/8” nap to apply a thin, even primer coat. Work in sections of about 10 sq ft. Allow to cure for the recommended time (typically 8–12 hours).
Step 3: Apply the Topcoat
Apply the topcoat in the same manner, working from the back of the room toward the exit. For decorative flakes, broadcast them into the wet coat immediately after application.
Step 4: Final Cure
Allow the epoxy to cure for at least 24 hours before foot traffic and 72 hours before vehicle traffic. Full chemical cure takes 7 days.
